Cambridge, England
Marianne works at The University of Cambridge, in Cambridge, England about fifty miles North of London. Her commute to work by train would be between 50 and 90 minutes. The city of Cambridge is known primarily for the world-renowned university with which it shares its name, the beautiful River Cam, green spaces, and museums. As a Cosmologist, Marianne most likely works in the Center for Mathematical Sciences (above far left)
Mile End, London
Mile End is a district in the East London Borough of Tower Hamlets, an area of London long associated with poverty, dangerous crime and described by several travel guides as “gritty.” Mile End is generally considered one of the more affordable neighborhoods, with rent prices running well-below the overall city averages. During the Second World War, Mile End sustained extensive damage from Nazi bombers, many of which were targeting the many Jewish residents. Traces of the ruins from the attacks are still visible there. The “grittiness” of the Mile End was made widely known outside of London by the titular song by Pulp, which was featured in Trainspotting. Mile End’s population is traditionally very ethnically diverse and is known for its authentic restaurants which may be what prompts Marianne to try to compliment the neighborhood’s dining options with “lovely curries.”
Wiltshire, EnGland
Wiltshire is a county in South West England about two hours from London by car. This largely rural area is known for its quaint historic villages and natural beauty. Tourists flock to the area which is home to Stonehenge and part of The Cotswolds. Compared to Mile End, it would be a much more practical location to keep bees.
